1.Do you know another instance where Curly was being a human predator other then when he started bossing his wife around?

Curly was being a human predator when he was messing with Linnei. For no reason at all. Linnie was so nice and curly just kept messing with him. Like when Curly first met Linnie he walked right pass George and started talking to Linnie like he was a boss. The thing about it was that Linnie was way bigger then Curly. Then later on in the novel Curly started fighting Linnie for no reason and Linnie then showed him who the boss was.


2.Could anything in this story have happened in the hood?

I though nothing likes this could happen in the hood until my English teacher starting saying he wanted to make a remake of this novel. And change stuff around and after listening to that I think something like this could happen in the hood. So things would just have to be changed around.



3.What message would you ask of the author of this book?

The message I would send to the author would have to be. What was the reason for writing this book? What did he want the readers to get out of this book? Did he want us to see how people don’t stick together all the time and when they do stick together they hurt other people. What did he want us to get out of this book? Also what made him come up and write this book? What was he thinking about?


4.Was Linnie and Bigger from native son anything a like?

They were very different. Linnie was kind of slow but he was happy the way he was. The littlest things in life was what really matted in life.Linnie never changed the way he acted for any one. He was not scared to be his self. But with bigger he was very confused with his life. He changed the way he acted for certain people and he acted like h e was tougher then he really was. Kind of like Curly.

5.What was the underline theme of this novel?

I think the underline theme of this novel would have to be to see how people are human predators. Every time somebody gets a chance to attack someone they do. Instead of helping someone and just friends they try to hurt the person and break them down.



6.What are some of the problems that the people had with their self in this book?

Well a lot of people in this book have a problem with their self. But the person I’m going to talk about is Curly Wife. Her problem with herself is that she could have been way better then what she is living now. She feels as though she can’t do anything. She can’t even talk to any other males, only Curly. She is very lonely and she just wants to live a better life and be able to have enough freedom to talk to others without Curly saying something.


7.What was some of the motives of the way Curly acted?

Some of the motives that forced Curly to act that way were because he had problems with his self and he felt as though he had to prove his self to everybody. In the novel all he wanted to do was show everybody that he was a boss. Just because he was shorter than the others did not mean anything because he was strong. That’s why he always tried to pick on everybody.



8.What was the turning point of this novel?

I believe that the turning point of the novel was when George shot Linnie in his head. That was the turning point of the novel for me because it was so sad. Everybody that was reading the novel could not believe it. I was in total shock. In a way I think George was doing his self a favor because he did not want anybody to hurt linnie but it was so sad because he had to do it. After all they had been through together.

Service Learning

In our last service we were talking as a group about if we sold some snacks or something what we should buy with the money. We came up with pencils and stuff like that. So we could buy math supplies. We came up with little sentences that would make people want to buy our stuff. One thing we came up with was Lollipops for leanring. Then we assigned every person to a date that would sale stuff for the whole week. We then talked about who would bring in the stuff to sale for our first sale coming up.

Of Mice and Men [human preadtor]

In this short essay I’m going to talk about how a lot of the main characters turned out to be human predators. The characters I’m going to talk about are Crooks, Curley and Curley’s wife. A predator is one that victimizes, plunders, or destroys, especially for one’s own gain.

The first person I would like to talk about it Crooks. Crooks is the only African American in the novel, His job was to take care of the horses. In the novel Of Mice and Men crooks was a human predator one particular time. In the novel George left Lennie alone to go out. While George was out Lennie decided to go up to Crooks room. When Lennie came in Crooks got mad and told him to leave. Crooks sounded very mad he said I’m not allowed to be in your room so you got to get out. Lennie then responded and Crooks found out that Lennie was slow. He then turned into a human predator. He started to tell him how George would leave him or he would get hurt. Lennie got real sad and started to cry. That part of the novel showed how Crooks was a predator. He victimized Lennie because he could. Crooks did this because he felt bad and it was easy to break Lennie down so he did.

Another character in this book that was a human predator was Curly. Curly was not self confident, he felt as though he had to show how powerful he was because he is shorter then the others. One of the main people Curly victimized was his wife. I think that Curly bossed his wife around because he wanted to show everybody that he ran his or her relationship. Curly also was very rude to Linnie, because Linnie was bigger then him and he wanted to show the other how brave and strong he was. After Curly found out that Linnie was slow he picked on him even more. In the novel Curly started to fight Linnie because he thought that he could make a fool of Lennie. It turned out that Lennie made a fool of him because he was stronger and crushed his hand.

The final human predator was Curly’s wife. She used her looks to victimize the other male workers. The main person that she victimized was Linnie. She tried to talk to him more then the other because she knew she could make him talk to her. In the novel would do little things to male linnie want to talk to her, she would pull on her dress and more. Another thing that she did to make linnie talk to her was open up to him and talk to him about stuff he would want to talk about.

In collusion I think that the author was trying to get across was that people could also be a predator. People are supposed to stick together but instead they find each other’s weakness and try to break the other person down. Only thinking about there selves.

Of Mice and Men [Symbolize] {GRADE THIS}

In this short essay I would like to talk about the book Of Mice and Men. This book has a lot of meaning to it, if you think about what’s going on in the book. The main thing I would like to talk about is Lennie’s puppy. I know you might be thinking that’s a corny essay. But that’s my point, to show you how the puppy symbolizes so much more. The puppy symbolizes new beginnings and dreams.

I would like to start talking about how a little puppy can symbolize so much more. Lennie’s puppy symbolizes new beginnings. By that I mean a clean slate, the person will be able to start over and change everything and forget about the past. When people think of new beginning they might think their new beginning is moving, getting a new home and more. The puppy in this book shows Lennie’s new beginning. It shows the new beginnings because Lennie is at a new place and he gets a new dog. Lennie enjoys spending time with the new puppy. The puppy shows that lennie can change now. He has a new life to start, just like the puppy. The new beginning in this book is the farm that Lennie , George and Candy would like to own. Were they could share home together and “live off the fat of the land.” Where they don’t have to worry about people canning them, because they own there own farm.

The final thing I would like to talk about it how the puppy symbolizes dreams. A dream is a very powerful thing that anyone can have, a dream is what keeps a person moving every day. In the novel Of Mice of Men the main dream that every body wants is to be able to live independently.

In conclusion, I think that the novel Of Mice of Men was a really good book. This book showed me that every thing you read symbolizes something, if you really think about it. So I hope my short essay helps you notice how much meaning this book really has, and makes you want to read the novel again to get the full effect of how well written this book is.

Service Learning

For the next service learning I know that I am going to have to read over the surveys that the 9th and 10th graders gave back to us. Which is about our service learning and there ideas so we know what they wold be willing to do and would they e willing to go. I think this class is going to be easy because it should not take that long to count the surveys and stuff.

Today for service learning I had a lot of thing I had to get done.Like I said there was a lot of running around that had to be done. I had to pass around the new surveys to each teacher and student. Thats really all I did. I had went to each class and told him about my service learning and they had to full out the sheet and then I went back to my service learning group and we talked about the papers that we got and what we need to do for the next service learning.Which would be count up the surveys.

Day 4 I think is going to be another very important day. Now every body has jobs that they need to do.I also know that we are going to be doing a lot of running around because we already have the paper typed up that we are giving to the teachers and studeants so all we need to do is print enought out and hand them out. But we need to get all the papers back because there's questions on their that needs to be answered. So we know how every one feels about our service learning since they are going to be invloved.

Day 3 of service I knew it was going to be the most important service learning day because we did a lot of things on the last service learning. I actually hsd some form of homework to do. I had to go home and type up the paeper that we were talking about during the class. So I knew that that this class was gping to be a lot about fixing the paper and making sure it was good enough to hand out to students and teachers.

Day 2 of service learnrig I was thinking that it was going to be so hard because we kinda did some work but it was not all that yet. I thought that we were going to talk about weather we was going to teach at a middle school in the neighborhood or teach 9th and 10th graders in our school because that issue came up in the first servive learning. So I thought that this service learnig was going to be kinda harder because we actually had questions that needed to be talked about and answered.

Day 1 of service laerning I did not have any thing prepared because I did not want to get work and every thing all ready because I heard that we were not doing the same thing as last year tourting. Anyway I thought the fisrt day was going to be easy any way because we were just going to set arorund and get to know every body in the group and talk about what kind of work we were going to do for the next service learning day.

SERVICE LEARNING [APRIL 25]

On friday service learning went well. We finished a lot of things in our group. Last service learning we made questions for the teachers and the students to answer. Well I was the person who had to type the paper up. I typed it up over the weekend and brought it in on friday. When my group cam together we printed the paper out that I typed and then we read over it as a class. We fixed a lot of things on the paper. Then I went and typed the paper over and made it better and make more sense. As I was typing the paper up my group was talking about what we would do for the next service learing. After the paper was all typed up and done we gave every body a job. Like we have a leader, reporter and more. I think is was the best service learning so fat because he did a whole lot and because the class went so fast.

SERVICE LEARNING

On the last service learning day I felt as though we did a good job. Every thing worked pretty good. In my group so far we have made questions for the teacher and students about how they would feel about having us help them with any work that do not understand. So far my undersatnding of my group so far is that we cant go out and teach younger kids from another school so we have to help students in our own school. I like my group a lot so far we are working well together. In my group I'm supossed ti=o write the questions for the students and teachers so they could pass them out and answer them.

Empire of the Sun

In English class we saw a movie called empire of the sun. The main character of the movie was a young boy named Jim also known as Jamie. In this short essay I would like to talk about how Jamie had a major character change in the movie. In this movie I would like to tell you his behavior when he was rich, poor and had nothing.

When the movie first started Jamie was rich and he had every thing. He had family and a big house. So as you know having every thing Jamie was very happy but he was kind of rude to his maid. He felt as though they had to do every thing he said.

After Jamie lost his mother and father in the big crowd you could see Jamie’s whole attitude changing. He was very scared and was acting like a crybaby. After his mother and father were lost in the crowd he returned home. You could see Jamie felt so sad. He looked all-lonely. When Jamie went out to find something to eat, He was real scared. He then gave up and started walking around saying he surrender to the soldiers.

Towards the end of the movie, the most interesting part of the movie to me Jamie made a total change. He walked around like he was a gangster but he cared about a lot of people though. Jamie did things he would never have thought about doing in the begging of the movie. Jamie was stealing from people. You can tell he hit rock bottom because in the begging of the movie Jamie had it all, he did not need to steal. He stood up for his self and others. For example the soldiers was about to destroy the hospital Jamie stood up for every one and the solider backed down. Even though Jamie was acting so hood he still was kind of soft. He cared a lot about his friends or family.


In conclusion I think that Jamie had so many character changes this movie. He went from happy to being a crybaby, to becoming a gangster. I really liked this movie it was so interesting and I hope that we could see some more good movies like this one.

SERVICE LEARNING

In my service learning group all we really did was talk with each other and the teacher. In my group we talked about what we wanted to do with our service learning. We did not really come up with anything in the group. It was kinda a waste.

three postivies

1. Mostly ever body got along in our group. so I know we are not going to have so many conflicts between the students because we all got along with each other.

2. Our group is small. That is good because sometimes when there is a big group of people trying to talk about a big topic such as service learning. With so many people trying to talk it wont work.

3. A good amount of people including me in the group did this same service learning last year so we were able to talk to the 9th graders about what we did last year.


three Negatives

1. Somebody acted liked they anit want to be in the group so they did not really care about it.

2. It was to funny some people were not getting along but I found it very funny.

3. I don't think this group id going to get to far I dont see where we are going with this. I dont understand why we can't do what we did last year.

SERVICE LEARNING

For service learning I still Kind of want to go a middle school and teach younger kids. Kids in the 4 or 5th grade. Last year I enjoyed working with the kids but if I was to do it again I hope that it would be more organized. Like Last time we did not even send that much time with the students so I left feeling like I did not teach them anything.

NHD REFLECTION

This year NHD did not go so well. I mean I was so stressed out working on things. My group members were Taylor and Ratisha. We worked really well together though. There were not that many disagreements, which was a good thing because there was not extra drama going on. Other then that finding our thesis statement I believe was the hardest part I am we had our conflict and comprise but we did not know how to word out thesis statement out. Another hard part of our NHD project was doing our annotated bib. We had a lot of website sources which did not look good, so we had to go and get some books. At the end of our project I think we pulled it together pretty well. I mean during the judging it was kind of hard. Some of the questions were kind of hard to answer and some of the questions that were asked of us we did not answer. I felt kind of bad about that because we should have known every thing about out topic and been able to answer every question asked of us. Our main topic was based on music during the Harlem Renaissance. The whole project helped me because I did not really know much about the Harlem Renaissance. The conflict was that there were racial issues during that time which kept African Americans from the entertainment life. The compromise was a group of people came together on an av. were they could entertain. I also learned that the Harlem renaissance was also known as the New Negro Movement. During this project I also learned a lot from a lady Ms. Figg who I interviewed. She was one of my group member’s grandmothers and she told me how she believed that the Harlem Renaissance affected her. That was a great interview because I learned a lot from her.

CHAPTER 2 {Bigger's Every day Life]

In this chapter Bigger and G.H go to the movie theater while waiting to meet at the pool hall at three. At the movie theater they masterbated to a movie. After they went to the movies they parted ways and Bigger went home to get his gun and his knife. He had to sneak in though so his mother would not stop him and ask him what he was up to. After leaving there he went to the pool hall to meet the guys to do the robbery. There he and Gus get into a confrintation and there for everyone was kicked out of the pool hall. When he gets back home he changes clothes and went to his job interview at the daltons house.

This chapter bascilly shows you how Bigger lives his every day life. As you know Bigger is in his 20's and he has nothing better to do then go to the movies with his friends and masrerbate. After he left the movies Bigger went home. As you can he does not have much freedom, Because he wanted to sneak in his house so his mother would not ask him were he was going, After he left his house he went for a job interview, Which means he is trying to get his life together a little. So he would have something to do.

CHAPTER 1 [Wake Up]

Chapter 1-Pages 3 to 27

In this chapter it begins with a bell ringing waking Bigger Thomas a brother and a sister and a mother in a small cramped apartment on the Southside of Chicago. While in their usual morning themes they come across a very deadly beast. A black rat appeared from under the bed. Panic arose and fear was amongst everyone. After the war between the Thomas family and a black rat bigger left and went to the pool hall. All of his friends Gus, Jack, and G.H. They discussed robbing a white guys shop for money. Inside he does not want to do it but the others do so Bigger goes along with it to keep the others off his back. Before they do the robbery they all rest. Bigger and G.H go to the movies and masturbate.

When the alarm rings its like the whole Harlem wakes up. This chapter shows you a little bit of how Bigger's life is in his home. The small room the bigger lives in is like his mind. His mind is small like he does not have any were to think and have room for his self. As you read he had to turn around so his mother and sister could get dressed, Usually a home is were people go and relax but Bigger does not seem like he can do that, Then Bigger and and his mother does not seem to get along well so that might cause more promblems.

Mary Dalton daughter of Mr. And Mrs. Dalton was reported missing on Saturday morning around 2 o’clock. Ms. Dalton was last seen by their chauffeur and her mother. The latest on Ms. Dalton is that she was supposed to be hiding out with a communist. The accusation is still not clear yet. It was also known to be a kidnapping, judging by the kidnappers letter sent to the Daltons home. We have actually read the letter sent to the Dalton’s family. The Kidnapper has made it clear that he wants ransom money. The letter also had instructions for the delivery of the ransom money. This letter was not sent in the mail, so we don’t have an address of the kidnapper. Mr. Dalton said the letter was left under the door. Mr. Dalton said the signature was “Reds”. We have heard from the Dalton’s family and they are willing to pay the ransom money. Mr. Dalton has made it clear that he does not want the police to be in this kidnapping. It is said that in the letter the kidnapper requested that the police does not be contacted.

Even though Mr. Dalton does not want much help from the police, we still ask you to speak up if you know anything about this case. Please contact the new paper, Thank you.

1.Knowledge: Can you tell why bigger acts the way he does. Why is does he act so mad all the time?

Bigger may be acting so mad all the time because of this life style. I mean he lives in a one-room apartment with his mother, little brother and sister. The boys have to turn around so the girls can dress. Bigger may also be acting like that because him and his mother does not get a long so well. In the book his mother told him “Sometimes I wonder why I birthed you” and he responded “Maybe you ought to left me were I was. That is not the way a mother and son should be talking to each other.

2.Comprehension: Who are the key characters of this book, and why are they the key characters?

The key characters of this book are Bigger and Mary. Bigger is the key character because the whole book is talking about Bigger and what he is doing. Mary on the other hand is also a key character because she came in the first book and they talked about her through out the whole book.

3.Application: What question would you ask f Bigger?

If I were to meet Bigger I would ask him what was his child life like. To add more to that I’m saying does the way he act now effect the way he is. Is that the reason why he is going around killing people, smoking and ect.

4.Analysis: What problem do you think Bigger has with himself?

I think the problem Bigger has with himself is that he feels that people don’t thanks him for the good things he does. Which makes him feel bad. When he does well he will always be the bad guy. As they said in the book say “YOU CAN’T WIN!”

5.Synthesis: If you were to compose a song about Bigger’s life what would it be about?

If I were to compose a song about Bigger’s life it would be about how he grow up in a home that was small and no space to his self. It would also be about how he felt being around his mother. Do to Bigger having a small room and not enougb space causes promblems. Bigger has no were to relax because there is not were he can go to be alone. Which means Bigger does not have much time for his self. Then Bigger does not get along with his mother. His mother told him she which she never birthed him which is kinda sad because no mother should tell there son that.

6.Evaluation: How would you have handled the situation with Bigger in the room alone with Mary being drunk?

In this situation i would have done first what came to biggers head. I would left the room and went in to my room and stayed there for he rest of the night. Staying in the room would have raised suspisioun to Mr.Dalton and his wife. By him staying in the room it was a bad decision on Biggers part of the situation. Mary was already drunk in the first place. A drunk white girl three in the morning in her room alone with a black man was not a good combination. I would have left and just forgot about the whole situation. She was drunk, she would have just woke up the next day with a hang over.

Topic Essay {NHD}

For my National History day project I decided to do it on music. But for my narrower topic Taylor Benns and Ratisha Summerville decided that we should focus on how blacks were not able to play music or perform, make cd and more. The one thing we are not to sure about is what time period we are going to start from. Some ideas we can up with was that we might work on finding out things about Harlem Renaissance. We looked more into that subject and we were just not interesting in that topic. So I guess you can say we are a little unsure about our topic.

For this NHD project we wanted to a documentary or a poster. The reason why we wanted to do a documentary is because we seen some documentary’s that were done last year and they looked cool. Also because a documentary looks more professional and my group members and I don’t like talking in public so we could just recorded our voice on top of the documentary. In addition to wanting to do a documentary we wanted to also think about doing a poster. The reason why we wanted to a poster is because we all are creative. And it would look nice if three creative people come together and do a poster board.

As you should already know Im working with Taylor Benns and Ratisha Summerville. The reason why we came together to do our NHD project is because we work very good together and we usually can agree on something so there wont be any conflict during this project. Last year I worked with Ratisha Summerville and it went very well and Taylor was there to help us when we needed it. So I think the group would be just fine together since we basically worked together last year.
